My work explores the complicated path of youth, beauty and femininity and the relationships of adolescence as expressed through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor. Where We Play is a pillow fort inspired piece rooted in innocence and nostalgia. Childhood pillow forts are places of discovery and exploration, but not all games of discovery have equally willing participants. The use of veiled, secret spaces is synonymous with abuse and control of the abused. I am creating a pillow fort space where “secrets” occur and deconstructing it; taking back the power of physical and psychological veiled spaces.
