My recent work has come from questioning the role of technology and industrialization in the artist’s life. I have been in a long-distance relationship during the entire span of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time of writing this, I have been unable to see my partner since before the start of the pandemic due to border closings, lockdowns, and quarantines. During this period, digital communication and text have overtaken my life and naturally found a way into my work. I have been drawn to intimate words and phrases that can express complicated and even contradictory emotions. One small word can be equally filled with the ecstasy of love or the pain of separation.

Ryan Meyer was raised between the suburban deep south and the road. He received his MFA from the University of California, Davis and has shown work nationally and internationally. He currently lives, works, and teaches in Birmingham, Alabama.
