I use digital printmaking processes to explore the imperfections of communication and how information that exists online can be distorted through how it's stored, ranked, categorized and generated by its users.
In this Di·chot·o·my series, I start with a simple antonym word pair to determine the focus of a piece. These opposing words are run through various digital information sources (online search algorithms, social media platforms, digital encyclopedias, etc.) to gather content. That content is then compressed, encoded, decoded, and combined through various digital translations into a single image. Through this process, I allow and encourage error. In some instances the image is distorted with spoken versions of the antonym pairs and in other instances the hexadecimal code base of the image is altered by its own social media comments. As a result, the main visual image is forced to interact with linguistic systems in unintended ways resulting in communication failures. These communication systems are denied their original structures and functions and instead serve as a new basis for visual abstractions.

This destruction caused by coalescing text and verbal communication into a visual form draws attention to the permeable and unstable qualities of visual imagery as communication. In an age where digital communication has become a necessity, I am drawn to the potential flaws that digital mediums can inject into language structures, visual forms, and ultimately how we as individuals interact with one another in an increasingly distanced society.

He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Montevallo and Samford University in Birmingham, AL. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Artist Image Resource in Pittsburgh, the Gittins Gallery at the University of Utah, and the CICA museum in South Korea.
