My work speaks to a love and respect for wood. I constantly search for choice examples that inspire my sensitivities and allow me to exhibit my colorful imagination. My whimsically elegant designs are influenced by natural forms which are used as metaphors and narratives for my ideas, feelings and philosophies. My titles become my language as they frequently play on words and phrases and express my offbeat sense of humor, often displaying a comedic tongue-in-cheek presence. With solid construction and silky finish, my creations become unique images that are often functional and always artistically relevant.

My formal art training began at the University of Alabama where I received a BFA degree in 1962. In 1980 I completed an MA degree in Educational Media from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Further study at UAB included 18 hours of studio work and a thesis in Art Education. After a brief stint as a technical illustrator from 1962 to 1964, I trained and became a producer-director for a variety of programs for 13 years. Writing, scoring, designing sets, and directing was a catalyst and inspiration for my present work. In 1979, while employed at UAB as a media specialist, I became fascinated with wood as a material for creating art. Initially furniture forms were my focus. While polishing my woodworking skills, I began exhibiting my work at festivals and accepting commissions on a part-time basis until 1994 when I retired from UAB and pursued my art full-time.
For more than 40 years, I have created hundreds of whimsical sculptural forms. My pieces are in 7 art museum permanent collections and numerous private collections in the United States and Europe. I have received scores of awards, including 18 “Best of Shows,” and twice received the prestigious Alabama Craft Fellowship. I have been a part of numerous group exhibitions and 7 solo museum exhibitions. My work has been published in numerous books and periodicals, including Alabama Masters: Artists and Their Works and Alabama Creates: 200 Years of Art and Artists. Also, I was one of 22 artists featured in the documentary video series, “Souls Journey – Inside the Creative Process.”
Passion for my art continues to challenge me as I search for exquisite form and compelling statement.
