I like to know how things fit together; I like complexity. I think William Occam was wrong; the simplest answer is not always the best. Complexities, fullness, infinitude, vastness, are the things that answer the big question for me and simplifying them is futile.
With that in mind I make paintings that are filled with complications. Many individual elements coalesce into a complete image, but one in which the edges and intersections remain obvious. Perhaps a result of my childhood in Illinois I am most comfortable with straight lines and rows of forms. The process is both intuitive and intentional, a call and response.

The beauty and infinite complexity of the natural world is a source of humility that is critical to our survival. The desire for the simplifying assumption and the faith that we have the one true answer is, in my mind, a path to tyranny. The challenge is to remain awestruck.

I entered the University of Wisconsin as a declared art major but when offered an opportunity to play music, I left the university and my art studies. That was 1969.
In 2001 I returned to painting. Without instruction or clear direction, I just kept painting. Slowly I began to understand the materials and the means to make a painting that I found interesting. In 2015 I was introduced to Marcia Wood and was eventually accepted as one of her gallery artists.

I have completed residencies at Hambidge in 2018 and the Virginia Center For Creative Arts in 2019. My work has been selected for inclusion in juried exhibitions by jurors including, Jerry Cullum, Timothy Flowers, Marianne Lambert, Karen Comer Lowe, Michael Rooks, Annette Cone-Skelton, and Anne lambert Tracht. I was the recipient of a Jurors Prize at the 2019 MOCA GA ‘Gathered’ exhibition. My most recent solo show was The Magpie’s Dilemma at the Marcia Wood Gallery in February of 2020. The most recent group show was ‘The Four Elements’, Curator Madeline Beck, Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art, Marietta, GA,2021. My next solo show will be with the Marcia Wood Gallery in January 2022.
