The nature of dreams, sometimes indistinct and hazy, sometimes bright and bold, influences the application of color in my work, which often wavers between soft watercolor and bold acrylic. As a lifelong comic reader, I am also inspired by the graphic quality of cartoons, and often use a similar language in the rendering of my figures. When I am not diving head-first into the realm of idealized fantasy, I reflect on my experiences with mental illness and trauma and create more dark, somber works in release of frustration. Whether the emotions behind my work stem from imaginative awe or depressive anger, I often find inspiration for my imagery from mundane occurrences, such as a sleeping cat or the kinds of clouds I see throughout the day. From that initial basis in reality, I then jump to the fantastic and surreal in my color choice, adding a touch of magic to the everyday.
